大气紧贴地面的一层叫对流层。它的高度因纬度不同而不一样,在低纬度热带地区,对流层的高度约为17~18公里;在中纬度温带地区约为10~12公里;在高纬度寒带地区仅为8~9公里。

对流层有三个主要特征:(1)温度随着高度的增高而降低,平均每上升1000米温度降低6℃。

(2)大气不断地进行对流运动,所以称为对流层。在地球表面,不同纬度,不同地表状况。受热表面,受热不均。受热多的地方大气温度高,密度小,大气处于不稳定状态,容易发生空气的上升运动;而在相对冷的地方,气温低,空气密度大,容易发生空气的下沉运动。大气的这种上升和下沉运动,称为对流运动。不同纬度带因受热不均,对流运动所达高度也不一样,所以高纬度与低纬度之间对流层的高度也不一样。

(3)经常发生复杂而恶劣的天气现象。大气中的水汽几乎全部集中在对流层,由于对流运动,造成云、雨、雪、雹等天气现象。

对流层与人的关系最密切,人类活动主要集中在对流层里,对流层的状况和异常现象的出现,都将影响到人类的生活。在科学技术飞速发展,工业高度发达的今天,人类对大气的影响也越来越显著。
