限制性定语从句是对先行词的修饰，相当于一个句子中不可省略的成分。即限制性定语从句为先行词在意义上是不可缺少的定语，若去掉，所修饰主句的内容就不完整或失去意义。这种从句和主句的关系十分密切，写时不可用逗号分开。
例：关系代词和关系副词指代对象
that作主语或宾语指物 1) It is Mount Tai that lies in Shangdong Province.(作主语）
2) That is the most interesting story (that) i have ever heard of.（作宾语）

指人 1) Who is the man that is reading a book over there?（作主语）
2) The girl (that) we saw yesterday is his sister.（作宾语）

which作主语或宾语指物 1) My favorite place is Kunming which is known as the Spring City.（作主语）
2) This is the place (which) he would ike to visit.（作宾语）
who,whom,和whose分别作主语，宾语和定语指人
1) The tall man who is playing basketball is Yao Ming.（作主语）

when,where和，why分别作时间状语，地点状语和原因状语

　　[注]：that和which都可指物，且在句中都可作主语和宾语，多数情况下可以互换。但在以下情况不可以互换 1.先行词既指人又指物。　　
2.先行词是不定代词all,everything,nothing,anything,much,little,few等。　　
3.先行词被all,every,any,little,only,much,no等修饰时，或先行词本身是all,much,everything,anything,no以及no构成的复合词。　　
4.先行词被形容词及序数词的最高级修饰。　　
5.先行词被the only,the very,the last,the same修饰。　　
6. 有两个或两个以上分别表示人或物的先行词。　　
7.主句以who,what,which开头的特殊疑问句。

描述性定语从句：即非限制性定语从句。相当于没有这个定语从句，主句也是结构完整，语意通畅的。一般用逗号隔开从句和主句。也可以用and连接主句和从句。从句可以放在主句后，也可在主句的中间。
例句： 1）The student , ( who is in red T-shirt) , is my uncle's little son.
身穿红T恤的那个学生是我叔叔的小儿子。
用and改写这个句子：The student is in red T-shirt and he is my uncle ' s little son.
2）I decide to go to the bookstore , where i lost ny wallet yesterday.
