  机织物的密度是指在织物纵横向的单位长度内纱线排列的根数。织物密度对其服用性能如强力、弹性、手感、身骨、透气透湿性以及织造过程中的断头率等都有很大影响。经纬密度大,织物就显得紧密、厚实、硬挺、耐磨、坚牢,密度小则织物稀薄、松软、通透性好。
  相同密度的织物如果采用的经纬纱粗细不同,那么织物实际疏密情况还会有差异。在对不同粗细纱线的织物紧密程度进行比较时,必须同时考虑经纬纱线细度和密度,这就是紧度,紧度即织物的相对密度,是经(纬)纱直径对相邻两根经(纬)纱平均中心距离的比值,以百分率表示。经纬向紧度过大的织物刚性增大,抗折皱性下降,耐平磨性增强,耐折磨性降低,手感板硬;而紧度过小,织物过于稀松,缺乏身骨。
  需要指出,织物的经向紧度、纬向紧度、总紧度之问相互制约;总紧度一定的情况下,经向紧度与纬向紧度大致相等时织物最为紧密,刚性最大;而经向紧度大于或小于纬向紧度,都使织物柔软、悬垂好。经向紧度与纬向紧度的不同值还影响织物经纬向断裂强度。
